International Surfing Association

isa

The International Surfing Association (ISA) is recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the World Governing Authority for Surfing.

It is the International Federation for the sport of surfing and governs all wave riding activities including Bodyboard, Bodysurf, Jet Surf, Kitesurf (in waves and freestyle), Kneeboard, Longboard, Paddle Surfing (Prone, paddling with hands), Short Board, Skimboard, Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP), Surf Kayak and Tandem.

The ISA is dedicated to the development of these sports worldwide. It provides guidance and advice to its members around the world on matters such as competition, judging, surf education, adapted surfing, anti-doping and other areas of development of the sport including surf coaching and instruction.

ISA membership includes the surfing National Governing Bodies of 69 countries on five continents, and its headquarters are based in San Diego, California.

Through our courses at Spot X in Australia, you can become a Level 1 Surfing Australia accredited surfing coach. Once Level 1 certified, you can then go for the Level 2 coaching accreditation.

The surf instructor qualifications are internationally recognised.

level 1

The Surfing Australia Level One Coaching Course is the minimum qualification required to be a coach/instructor. To obtain this award an individual must adhere to the following accreditation requirements:

  • Attendance at two day Surfing Australia Level One Coaching Course
  • 20 hours practical coaching (beginner level) guided by supervisor coach
  • Coach competency checklist, completed then signed off by designated supervisor coach
  • Understand and sign ‘Coach’s Code of Ethics’ agreement
  • Surfing Australia membership
  • Working With Children Check
  • Hold any one of the following awards:

Bronze proficiency: Surf Lifesaving Association (SLSA)
Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community award
Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS)
OSSCA Award Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association (APOLA)

level 2

To obtain the Level 2 Surf Coaching Accreditation, you need to hold the Level 1 Surf Coaching Accreditation as a pre-requisite.

Becoming a Level 2 Coach takes the coach from learn to surf through a greater understanding of competitive surfing. By gaining your Level 2 accreditation it also opens up greater opportunities to become involved in coaching at a State and High Performance level. To obtain this award an individual must adhere to the following accreditation requirements:

  • Attendance at two day Surfing Australia Level Two Coaching Course
  • 40 hours of face to face coaching practice at Novice or developing surfer level
  • Maintain practical coaching diary
  • Completion of online exam
  • Surfing Australia membership
  • Working With Children Check
  • Hold any one of the following awards:

Bronze proficiency: Surf Lifesaving Association (SLSA)
Surf Rescue Certificate: SLSA Community award
Ocean Rescue Award: Royal Lifesaving Society (RLSS)
OSSCA Award Professional Ocean Lifeguard Association (APOLA)
