BASI is a Members' association and the nationally and internationally recognised body for training and examining British Snowsport Instructors. The BASI Mission is to create a national and international reputation for excellence through the provision of the highest quality of training and support services, for snowsport instructors.

Snowsports is an exciting, very demanding and ever-developing industry to work within. BASI recognises and values the importance of encouraging an individual’s enjoyment of skiing and snowboarding and values individual strength of feeling and passion for a broad range of approaches to snowsport.

BASI provides courses in five disciplines: Alpine, Snowboard, Nordic, Telemark and Adaptive. Qualifications within each discipline are available and BASI is now encouraging members to cross-over from their favoured discipline and to investigate and experience other disciplines.

BASI has 4 levels of instructor certification for both Alpine (ski) & snowboard and our courses take you up to Level 2 in a structured programme.

basi alpine level 1 instructor (ski)

BASI Alpine Level 1 is the entry level certification entry level course for students who wish to join the BASI Education System and to work with novice to early intermediate skiers. You must possess competent parallel skiing skills to undertake this course.

The qualification is for those wishing to find employment in a non mountain environment, i.e. Dry Slopes and Indoor Snowslopes. It is also the 1st stage of the BASI Instructor Level 2.

The course content covers:

• Safeguarding Children Module
• First Aid Certificate
• Technical and Teaching Training & Assessment Module
• 35 Logged Hours of Ski School Experience

The logged hours of teaching ski school experience may include the following:

• Understanding how bookings are taken and how people are selected into different standards
• Shadowing experienced Instructors delivering lessons
• Delivering lessons as per the constraints for the Level 1 Licence
• Understanding how customer satisfaction is assessed and how dissatisfied customers are dealt with
• Understanding how the Customer satisfaction procedures improve Instructor and administrational practises
• Taking part in and understanding in house staff training for Instructors
• Understanding how Snowsports Schools maintain Safety standards and maintain their currency of good practise
• Understanding the Risk Assessment process that Snowsport Schools and Instructors take
• Understand Accident and First Aid procedures including accident reporting

The Alpine Level 1 course / exam is a 5 day training and assessment course in which the following subjects
are covered and assessed:

• Skiing safely
• Planning, conducting and evaluating an instructing session
• Participating in an accident and emergency activity
• Knowing and understanding how to improve personal skiing and instructing performance

Understanding of:

• The Central Theme and Beyond
• The FIS Rules of Conduct
• The Principles of Ski Teaching
• The Structure of Snowsport in the UK
• The Roles of Snowsport Agencies in the UK
• Marketing and Promoting Snowsport in the UK
• Dealing with accidents and emergencies

Please note that the BASI Alpine Level 1 qualification is only the entry level qualification and enables people to work only on dry slope or indoor snow slopes. You need to pass the Alpine Level 1 to undertake the Level 2.

basi alpine level 2 instructor (ski)

BASI Alpine Level 2 Instructor is the continuation from the Level 1 and comprises of Technical, Teaching Training and Assessment.

Successful students will be able to ski to a competent level, and have the knowledge, ability and understanding to safely teach alpine skiing up to and including parallel standard on marked pistes. Individuals who do not reach the required level may be required to resit all or part of the course.

basi snowboard level 1 instructor

BASI Snowboard Level 1 Instructor is the entry level course for students who wish to join the BASI Education System. The qualification is for those wishing to find employment in a non mountain environment, i.e. Dry Slopes and Indoor Snowslopes. It is also the 1st stage of the BASI Instructor Level 2.

You must be a competent or advanced recreational rider and the course content covers:

basi snowboard level 2 instructor

BASI Snowboard Level 2 Instructor is the continuation from the Level 1 with a module on Technical, Teaching Training and Assessment.

The Level 2 course / exam is a 10 day on-snow training and assessment course, in which the following subjects are covered and assessed:

• Technical Snowboarding (practical)
• A thorough grounding in the snowboard instructor technical syllabus (central theme)
• Snowboard Teaching (practical)
• Training, analysis and practice of teaching snowboarding using the progression skills from the technical syllabus
• Theory and Off-snow Content
• Safety and fitness for Snowboarding
• Communications
• Lesson planning
• Technical consolidation
• Principles and practice of snowboard teaching

Successful students will be able to ride to the level required and have the knowledge, ability and understanding to teach snowboarding in a variety of situations. A Snowboard Level 2 Instructor can teach all aspects of the snowboarding central theme up to and including basic turning within the confines of a patrolled area. Individuals who do not reach the required level may be required to resit all or part of the course.
