RYA Day skipper theory knowledge is essential including ability in chart work, navigation, plotting a course, estimating position and leeway, application of deviation and variation, plotting transits, making a passage plan, IALA buoyage system, light characteristics and safety & emergency equipment.

The RYA Day Skipper Practical Course is an internationally recognised certificate designed for individuals with significant previous sailing experience and a comprehensive understanding of sailing theory behind the practice.
This is a 5 day practical course which teaches practical skippering techniques and builds on your theoretical knowledge.
If successful at the end of this course, you will gain the qualification and experience needed to be able to set sail onboard you own yacht on a Yacht Charter or Flotilla holiday to many breathtaking worldwide destinations.
The minimum pre-course experience required is 5 days sailing and living onboard, 100 miles logged and 4 hours night sailing. You will also need to have completed your Day Skipper Theory course prior to taking your practical, or have knowledge equivalent to this level.
This RYA Day Skipper practical course will teach you the basic practical skippering techniques which will enable you to be a day skipper of a yacht on short coastal passages by day, in both tidal and non-tidal waters. As a skipper, you will be responsible for the management of a yacht, and so this course also includes meteorology, basic engine checks, passage planning, preparing the yacht for sea, and rules of the road.
Following this 5 day course you will have knowledge in deck work, navigation and passage making, as well as being a confident skipper under sail and power.

Bedding: sleeping bag, pillow and a towel, soft pack bag, white soled non marking shoes, money for meals and mooring fees.
