This RYA Coastal Skipper and Yachmaster Theory course runs once a month and is based at Sunsail's dedicated training facility at Port Solent in the UK.

coastal skipper & yachmaster theory course description
The Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Theory course is designed to give experienced RYA Day Skippers the confidence to undertake longer and more complex passages which may involve sailing at night.
This is a demanding shorebased course and over the 5 days you will be taught advanced navigation techniques including:
- tides and tidal streams
- pilotage
- meteorology
- safety at sea
- passage planning and advanced navigation techniques including yacht positioning
- use of a magnetic compass
- GPS and chart plotters
- with three exams taken during the course to test your understanding
Developing your knowledge and understanding of navigation and other theory knowledge, this course is the next step following your Day Skipper course, and an ideal bridge between this and the full RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course, or any of the Yachtmaster tiers.
On completion you will have successfully completed three exams on chartwork, meteorology and IRPCS (The International Regulations for Prevention of Collision at Sea).
You are now ready to take either your Coastal Skipper Practical course or Yachtmaster Coastal exam.
